Specification (Representation)

The images which form the basis of film are never simply 'pictures of reality' but always provide points of view about what they portray. This is the root of the study of representation and learners will need to study the significance of different representations within the films they study. They will need to explore how their chosen films represent, and thus offer particular perspectives on, gender, ethnicity, age and different cultures.

Guidelines

• Use the number of marks to guide the length of your response:
  • 1 or 2 marks — write a sentence or two.
  • 3 or 4 or 5 marks — write at least two paragraphs.
  • 15 marks — write multiple paragraphs.
• Read all the questions before you begin — making a poor decision on the first question could affect your ability to answer later questions.
• Ensure you make enough points to justify the marks on offer.
• If asked to "identify" a key element you must make specific reference to a described example from The Wave.
• Read the questions carefully — check whether you are being asked to generalise or write specifically about the film you have studied. </aside>
