About
- Question 1 will have multiple parts. The number of questions varies from year to year but will always be worth 4 marks in total. It is the easiest question on the paper but must still be approached with caution. You only have around 4 minutes to complete this section.
- Question 1 will always examine a short part of Text 1.
- The questions assess your ability to identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas from a single text.
- Explicit information and ideas are those that are stated outright.
- Implicit information and ideas are those that require you to “read between the lines”.
- You will be required to find both explicit and implicit information and ideas.

Example
- Imagine a text that says, “Bernard proffered Brenda a single red rose”. The fact that a horticultural item has been passed from a male human being to a female human being is explicit. The fact that Bernard fancies Brenda is implicit.
