How To Revise

  1. Be realistic. There is a limit to how much you can remember. Be selective.
  2. Read through your summaries of each part of the play and make a chronological list of significant moments, events, or encounters involving Mr Edward Hyde.
  3. Review the tables of quotations below. Make your own shorter list of quotations that exemplify the character arc you have just described. Make sure you draw inspiration from all the relevant chapters.
  4. Make sure you can answer all the questions in the Check Your Knowledge section. Make a list of additional quotations that would make your answers convincing.
  5. Create a “character arc” infographic or mind-map, similar to the examples at the bottom of this page. Augment each quotation with two or three adjectives that you could use when writing an essay. </aside>

Check Your Knowledge

  1. In your own words, describe Mr Hyde and the incident through which he is first introduced in the novella.
  2. In your own words, describe what motivates Mr Hyde and explain how he differs from Dr Jekyll and other members of polite Victorian society.
  3. Having read the whole novella, including Dr Jekyll’s final account in Chapter 10, describe in your own words Mr Hyde’s “journey”. What are the key events?
  4. If you were answering the above questions in an essay format but could only include five quotations, what would they be?
  5. Other characters’ reactions to Mr Hyde are very revealing. What five short quotations exemplify these?
  6. Knowing that making reference to context is a key requirement of this component, identify two opportunities to do so. </aside>
