Course
- You are studying the OCR GCSE English Language specification.
- This page gives an overview of the English Language qualification, but you will also study English Literature.
- You will sit two exams (Component 1 and Component 2) and perform one in-class Spoken Language Assessment (Component 3).
- Component 1 — Non-Fiction — Communicating Information And Ideas — is 120 minutes in length and is worth 50% of your English Language GCSE.
- Component 2 — Fiction — Exploring Effects And Impact — is 120 minutes in length and is worth 50% of your English Language GCSE.
- Component 3 — Spoken Language Endorsement — is not examined but will be assessed in class and reported (fail/pass/merit/distinction) on your English Language GCSE certificate.

Assessment Objectives
- Your success will be measured against 9 Assessment Objectives:
- AO1
- (i) — Identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas.
- (ii) — Select and synthesise evidence from different texts.
- AO2 — Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology to support their views.
- AO3 — Compare writers’ ideas and perspectives, as well as how these are conveyed, across two or more texts.
- AO4 — Evaluate texts critically and support this with appropriate textual references.

- (i) — Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences.
- (ii) — Organise information and ideas, using structural and grammatical features to support coherence and cohesion of texts.
